Which machining process for which part?

Many buyers can describe the part they need without knowing the process that produces it. Here are the most common matches; when in doubt, describe the part in your request and the workshops will steer you.

Cylindrical part, in volume

Screws, shafts, fittings, tips, spacers: this is Swiss machining (bar turning) for high volumes from bar stock, or plain turning for shorter runs and larger diameters. Swiss machining becomes markedly cheaper beyond a few thousand pieces.

Prismatic or complex-shaped part

Housings, plates, brackets, moulds: this is milling. As soon as the geometry requires several tool orientations — a part that would need three set-ups on a conventional machine — 5-axis milling cuts the re-fixturing, and with it the set-up deviations and the price.

Tight tolerance or demanding surface finish

Below a hundredth of a millimetre, or for a mirror finish, a finishing operation is added: grinding for cylindrical bearing surfaces and flatness, lapping for bores. These come after turning or milling; they do not replace them.

Very hard material, or a shape conventional cutting cannot reach

Hardened steel, carbide, sharp internal corners, deep cavities: EDM works with no cutting force. Wire EDM for through cuts, sinker EDM for blind cavities. Slow and costly per part, but often the only route.

Deep hole, gear, keyway

Some geometries call for a dedicated machine: deep hole drilling beyond a ten-to-one depth ratio, gear cutting for teeth, slotting for internal keyways. A general workshop will often subcontract these.

How to choose a machining subcontractor

Two workshops advertising the same processes can be incomparable on your part. Here is what actually separates them, in the order it matters.

Machine capacity, in figures

Maximum diameter and length, admissible weight, number of axes, spindle bore. A 400 mm part does not fit a lathe that takes 250, however good the workshop. This is the first filter, and the only binary one.

Tolerances actually achieved

Ask for routine production tolerances, not records. A workshop quoting a micron on a showpiece while working to a hundredth every day will cost you scrap. Cross-check the answer against inspection equipment: without a CMM, a tight tolerance cannot be verified.

Typical batch sizes

A prototyping shop and a volume shop have neither the same machines, nor the same prices, nor the same lead times. Giving ten parts to a Swiss shop tooled for a hundred thousand means paying a set-up over ten pieces. Conversely, a prototyper will not hold a production rate.

Materials they actually run

Stainless steel, titanium, Inconel and engineering plastics are not machined with the same tooling or at the same speeds. A shop used to aluminium can machine titanium, but rarely at the best price. Check that your material is part of their daily work.

Certifications, where they are required

ISO 9001 for the quality system, EN 9100 for aerospace, ISO 13485 for medical, IATF 16949 for automotive. They do not guarantee a better part, but they gate access to certain markets — and without them your own customer may refuse the supply.

Proximity, and what it is really worth

It matters less for freight than for development: a workshop an hour away can be visited, and a complex part is sorted out far faster face to face. On a simple, repetitive part it makes almost no difference.

Frequently asked questions about machining subcontracting

What should I prepare to get an accurate quote?

A drawing or 3D file if you have one, the material and its delivery condition, the quantity and how often it repeats, the critical tolerances, any surface treatments, and the lead time you need. Without a drawing, a dimensioned photo or a precise description is enough for an order of magnitude. Until the workshop has seen the exact geometry, a quotation stays indicative.

I do not know which process I need. Is that a blocker?

No. Describe the part, its function, its material and the quantity: the workshops will identify the process, that is their job. The guide above gives the most common matches if you want to narrow it down, but it is not a prerequisite for an enquiry.

Do I absolutely need a drawing to consult?

Not for a first conversation, yes for a firm quote. A dimensioned sketch, a photo with the main dimensions, or even an existing part to copy is enough to open the discussion. No workshop, however, will commit to a price and a lead time without a drawing or 3D file defining the tolerances.

What is the difference between turning, milling and Swiss machining?

In turning, the part rotates and the tool is fixed: this produces rotational shapes. In milling, the tool rotates and the part is clamped: this produces prismatic and complex shapes. Swiss machining is automated turning from bar stock, designed for high volumes of small parts — a question of volume and automation, not of geometry.

Will a workshop accept a one-off part or a prototype?

Many will, but not all, and not at the same price. A workshop set up for volume charges a machine set-up spread over thousands of parts; on a single piece, that set-up is the dominant cost. State the quantity clearly in your request: you will be pointed to workshops for which it is daily work.

What lead times should I expect?

They depend on workshop load, material availability and complexity. A simple part in a common material takes a few days to a few weeks; a complex part with treatments and inspection takes longer. Say if your deadline is firm: some workshops hold capacity for urgent work, others do not.

How many workshops receive my request?

Those whose service area and processes match your need. You are not directed to a single supplier: a consultation only makes sense if several offers can be compared. Your request is never circulated beyond the relevant workshops.

Which processes does the directory cover?

Do you cover the whole of France?

Town pages cover the main industrial areas, with greater density where machining is historically established: the Arve valley, Franche-Comté, Alsace, Rhône-Alpes, Pays de la Loire. A town without a dedicated page may still have listed workshops — your request is not limited to the towns listed.

Can a part be machined from a 3D model alone, with no 2D drawing?

Technically yes, programming starts from the 3D model. But with no dimensioned drawing, nothing states which dimensions are critical and which are not: the workshop applies general tolerances, often tighter than needed — and therefore more expensive — or too loose for your function. A drawing, even a rough one, marking the functional dimensions brings the price down.
