How to choose your machining workshop
Choosing a machining subcontractor depends first on the nature of your part. A part of revolution (shaft, ring, axle) calls for turning; a prismatic part with complex shapes calls for milling, ideally 3 or 5 axes. For shapes impossible to obtain by conventional cutting, EDM becomes necessary.
Check the materials mastered
Not all workshops work the same materials. Aluminium and steel are almost universal; stainless steel, titanium and superalloys require more expertise and suitable tooling, common in aerospace- and medical-oriented workshops.
Match the batch volume
For a prototype or a one-off part, favour a responsive workshop with a design office. For medium or large batches, machine capacity and automation become decisive for the unit price.
Processes & materials available
