Lapping is justified when dimensional or geometric tolerances exceed the usual capabilities of turning, milling or even grinding. It is relevant for achieving flatness or roundness in the order of a micron, very low roughness, or for adjusting a functional clearance between two parts that must slide or seal without excessive play. It is also the solution chosen when a part has undergone slight distortion after heat treatment and must be brought back within its final tolerance without heavy machining rework. If the requested geometry remains standard and tolerances stay wide, conventional machining or simple grinding is usually sufficient, as lapping adds extra cost and lead time.
The criteria that truly distinguish two workshops
Capabilities differ first by the type of machine available: flat lapping, bore lapping, manual lapping or lapping on an eccentric-motion machine, each suited to a specific geometry. The achievable tolerance depends on the equipment, the operator's experience and the quality of the lapping compound or abrasive plate used; some workshops master very fine surface finishes while others remain at more common roughness levels. The materials processed also matter: heat-treated steels, stainless steel, aluminum alloys or technical ceramics are not lapped with the same abrasives or speeds.
