New or used: what actually changes
The question is not which is “better”, but which fits your situation: your cash position, your in-house skills, and the role the machine will play on the shop floor.
What you pay for with new
A manufacturer warranty, a current and supported CNC control, operator training, installation handled for you, and a delivery lead time often counted in months. You are also paying for certainty: the machine leaves the factory, its history is known, its performance is contractual.
What you gain with used
A markedly lower price and immediate availability — often the deciding factor when an order lands and capacity is short. In return, actual condition depends entirely on past use, the CNC control may no longer be supported, and recommissioning is on you.
The retrofit case
A mechanically sound machine with obsolete electronics can take a recent CNC control. Intermediate cost, machine brought back up to standard for a decade. This only makes sense if the mechanics — slideways, spindle, ballscrews — are in good order: a retrofit does not undo mechanical wear.
What decides it in practice
If the machine is central to your production and runs continuously, new is justified: downtime costs more than the price gap. If it absorbs a peak, covers a secondary operation or tests a market, used is reasonable. And if nobody in-house can diagnose a fault, the warranty earns its price.
What to check before buying a used machine
A used machine can be judged in a few hours on site. These are the points that cost dearly when discovered afterwards.
Spindle hours, not age
The year of manufacture tells you nothing. A fifteen-year-old machine run on one shift is in better condition than a five-year-old machine run around the clock. Ask for the spindle hour counter and the usage history: that is the figure that matters.
Geometry and actual accuracy
Have a test part machined in front of you and measure it. A geometric check — flatness, squareness, axis backlash, spindle runout — tells you what the seller will not. On an expensive machine, an independent inspector costs a fraction of the risk avoided.
The CNC control and its support
A control for which the manufacturer no longer supplies parts turns any fault into weeks of downtime. Check the control generation, board availability, and whether your programmers can use it: an unusual control means training you had not budgeted for.
What is included, and what is not
Toolholders, chucks, jaws, workholding, control pendant, documentation, software licences: these accessories represent a considerable sum and often disappear between the visit and the delivery. List them in writing, annexed to the order.
Dismantling and transport
Who dismantles, who loads, who insures in transit, who recommissions and realigns the geometry on arrival? A machine tool does not move like furniture: it needs proper lifting and realignment after placement. This line is quoted separately and is often overlooked.
The real cost of a machine, beyond the sticker price
The machine price is only part of the investment. The items below almost always apply, and are almost as often forgotten.
Site preparation. A heavy machine needs a suitable floor slab, sometimes a foundation block. Add the electrical supply at the right rating, compressed air, swarf removal and oil mist extraction.
Tooling and workholding. Toolholders, inserts, jaws, dedicated fixtures: on a machining centre, complete tooling represents a significant share of the machine price, and it gates getting into production.
Programming and training. A post-processor to adapt to your CAM software, operators to train, and a ramp-up period during which the machine does not produce at its rated output.
Maintenance and consumables. Service contract or wear parts, lubricants, filtration. On a used machine with no warranty, budget a reserve for the first faults: they often appear in the early months, when the machine changes duty cycle.

How does a machine enquiry work?
You describe what you are looking for — machine type, capacity needed, new or used, indicative budget, timing — and the enquiry goes to the relevant suppliers. It is free, needs no account, and commits you to nothing. Replies come to you directly from the suppliers.
What warranty comes with a used machine?
That depends entirely on the seller. A professional dealer usually offers a limited warranty, often a few months and sometimes restricted to certain assemblies. A sale between companies is frequently as-is, with no warranty. Get the duration, the assemblies covered, and who pays for labour and travel confirmed in writing.
Can a machine be inspected before purchase?
Yes, and it is advisable above a certain value. Independent firms carry out a geometric check and a CNC control diagnosis. The cost bears no comparison with a machine whose spindle needs replacing. Do it before signing, not after.
How long from order to production?
For used, a few weeks: dismantling, transport, placement, geometry realignment, connections. For new, allow the manufacturer’s build time — often several months — plus installation and training. In both cases, expect a ramp-up period before rated output.
Does installing a machine require building work?
Often. Depending on weight and vibration, a reinforced slab or a foundation block may be needed. Add the electrical supply at the right rating, compressed air, extraction or mist filtration, and access for lifting. Ask for the installation data sheet before committing.
Should I avoid a machine whose CNC control is no longer supported?
Not necessarily, but the risk must be costed. If the mechanics are sound, a retrofit brings the machine up to standard for a life comparable to a new one, at intermediate cost. If you do not plan that retrofit, be aware the first electronic fault can idle the machine for weeks, or end it.
Can a machine be financed by lease or hire purchase?
Most suppliers work with finance houses and offer leasing or hire purchase, including on used machines through professional dealers. This preserves cash and spreads the cost, at a higher total than outright purchase. Compare the total cost, not the monthly payment.
Which brands and types are listed?
