A surface grinder machines flat surfaces by moving the workpiece under the wheel on a reciprocating or rotary table. A cylindrical grinder rotates the workpiece about its axis to machine external or internal surfaces of revolution. The choice depends directly on the geometry of the parts to be produced.
Ask for the maintenance log, geometric inspection reports (table flatness, axis squareness), grinding spindle play measurements and, if possible, a test-piece grinding certificate. These documents allow you to objectively assess the true condition of the machine before entering negotiations.
Not necessarily. For simple parts and small batches, a conventional grinder may be sufficient. CNC becomes relevant as soon as you need to program complex grinding cycles, manage non-linear profiles, maintain strict repeatability over large production runs or integrate the machine into an automated cell.
Have a test piece ground under the intended operating conditions and measure the result with traceable instruments (micrometer, height gauge, profilometer). Also check the flatness of the magnetic table and the squareness of the wheel relative to the table using a dial indicator. These practical tests are more reliable than reading the manufacturer's specifications alone.
